Technical Implementation FAQ

This Technical Implementation FAQ is targeted towards new customers, or customers who are auditing their network and computer systems for performance. Please review the FAQ and contact our support team (800-323-9084) with any additional questions.

System Requirements
1.1 What are the system requirements for teacher and student computers?
1.2 Do I need any special software or plugins on my computer?
1.3 Will I need to download any special or proprietary codecs to watch Discovery Education videos?
1.4 Do I need any special settings in my browser to use Discovery Education streaming?

Network Requirements
2.1 Our network is protected by a Firewall/Content Filter, what exceptions should I allow for Discovery Education streaming?
2.2 We are using a proxy in our network to control internet access, are there any special settings required?
2.3 Do we need to support HTTPS sessions (SSL/TLS, on port 443) to use Discovery Education?
2.4 What type bandwidth usage should we provision our networks for to use Discovery Education streaming?

System Requirements:

1.1  What are the system requirements for teacher and student computers?

Discovery Education is dedicated to providing platform agnostic solutions that deliver engaging, relevant, standards-aligned content on any device, anytime, anywhere. We are continually working to provide an increased level of accessibility from multiple platforms, including PCs, Macs, mobile devices (Android, iPhone), and tablets like the iPad.

1.2    Do I need any special software or plugins on my computer?
In order to view PDF teaching materials, educational videos, and dynamic learning tools, the following programs must be installed:
•    Adobe Reader 9 or newer (PDF documents)
•    ShockWave 10.2 or newer (dynamic learning content)
•    Flash 9 or newer (dynamic learning content and educational video)
•    Windows Media Player 10 or newer (educational video on PC)
•    Quicktime 7 or newer  (educational video on Mac)


1.3    Will I need to download any special or proprietary codecs to watch Discovery Education videos?
No, proprietary codecs are not used in content encoding.


1.4    Do I need any special settings in my browser to use Discovery Education streaming? 
If possible, disable caching in the browser for Discovery Education resources.  Site content is dynamic and user-specific and should not be cached.


Network Requirements:

2.1  Our network is protected by a Firewall/Content Filter, what exceptions should I allow for Discovery Education streaming?

2.2    We are using a proxy in our network to control internet access, are there any special settings required?
If your proxy performs content filtering, please add the exceptions listed in the previous question.  In addition make sure that the proxy is not caching Discovery Education resources. The Discovery Education site is dynamic and user-specific and should be excluded from proxy caching or any other caching mechanism in the network. 


2.3     Do we need to support HTTPS sessions (SSL/TLS, on port 443) to use Discovery Education?
HTTPS is not currently used for Discovery Education website access.


2.4     What type bandwidth usage should we provision our networks for to use Discovery Education streaming?
The bandwidth requirements for DE streaming usage vary for each customer depending on the video format quality enabled for users and the number of simultaneous users at peak and non-peak hours.  Discovery Education provides multiple video format options at different bit rates:  300 kbps (low-res H.264), or 2 Mbps (High-res H.264).  The configured video format can be the same throughout the district, or can be configured differently per school.  We would be happy to speak with your technical team prior to implementation to run through the optimal setup given your network architecture.
