Your Science Techbook Course
Once you open a Science Techbook course, you have access to the entire course, the units, and lessons. Your course page features a visually engaging, browse-enabled grid format.
From course pages you can access the following:
- Table of Contents: Provides a linear view of Concepts, Teacher Overviews, Lessons, Extensions, and Concept Check-Ins. Note that for K-5, the table of contents is located in the top action bar and for 6-12, the table of contents is located in the left side menu.

Unit Navigation
Select any unit to access a unit's Teacher Overview, Lessons, Extensions, and Concept Check-Ins. All units are connected to phenomena, align to standards, and follow the 5E instructional approach (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate). To explore more resources linked to a unit, click the Explore More Resources button.
Use these resources related to a unit for background, reinforcement, or extension.
5E Instructional Model
Science Techbook follows the 5E Model of Instruction (5Es), a research-based instructional framework that uses complex essential questions to guide the learning experience.
Each of the 5Es describes a phase of learning: Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate. The 5Es allows students and teachers to experience activities that build upon prior knowledge to construct meaning and demonstrate progress toward learning goals. Note that the below image is GK-5.
The inquiry learning cycle is not linear, which allows you to move between the 5Es to best meet students' needs. Resources in Science Techbook are organized around the 5E instructional model based on student use: engaging with a concept, exploring resources, explaining understanding, elaborating through deeper investigation, and evaluating comprehension. Note that the below image is secondary science.
