BANDWIDTH
Streaming video can consume bandwidth heavily. Our adaptive HTTP Live Stream (HLS) technology automatically chooses the best quality video (on average between 300 Kbps – 2+ Mbps bit-rate) based on the available bandwidth. Newer titles may have higher bit-rates available due to higher quality video. The formula below can provide insight into the amount of bandwidth that may be consumed by streaming video:
(Bit-rate) x (Number of concurrent streams) / (Total available bandwidth) = Bandwidth consumption percentage
These strategies can help reduce the amount of bandwidth consumed during peak hours:
- Download video content during off-peak hours in preparation for the lesson.
- Use workstations or projectors when presenting videos to a class.
- Use our adaptive HTTP Live Stream (HLS) for automatic bit-rate adjustment based on available bandwidth. (Enabled by default!)
For Techbook users:
Techbook shifts the teaching strategy with Discovery Education from primarily video content to a blended multimedia platform including targeted video segments, text, interactives, images, assessments, etc. This shift naturally reduces the bandwidth consumption of streaming video and focuses on a deeper immersion into the lesson for the student.
