Overview
AI TeacherTools | Assess helps educators generate high-quality assessments using classroom content. This guide walks you through how to prepare, upload, and customize your materials for the best results.
What source materials can I use?
You can build an assessment using up to four source materials. These can be selected directly from Discovery Education Experience or uploaded from your own files. Supported formats include PDF, PPTX, DOCX, and TXT.
Note that the more written content your source includes, the better the AI can generate meaningful questions.
What's the best content to use?
To ensure high-quality quizzes, provide more written content (including transcripts) in the source material. A warning will display if the source material is insufficient to support the number of questions selected for an assessment. The assessment will still generate the selected questions, but the quality may be decreased.
Before uploading content from outside Discovery Education Experience, ensure compliance with copyright and intellectual property laws. Only upload content if you have the necessary rights to do so.
Do not upload any source material that includes personally identifiable information such as names, addresses, or other contact information about students, parents, or others.
How do I write a strong assessment prompt?
If you're using Discovery Education Experience content, a description is already included. For uploaded content, you’ll need to provide a clear and specific prompt. This helps the AI understand what to focus on.
Consider including:
- The subject area (e.g., science, ELA)
- What students are expected to learn
- Key topics or concepts the assessment should cover
How do I align my assessment to Standards and Learning Objectives?
AI TeacherTools | Asess can suggest learning objectives or standards based on your source material. You can also add them manually.
To align with state standards, follow these steps:
- Click “Identify state standards”.
- Select your state, topic, and grade level.
The system will generate options that match your content and selections.
How do I use Bloom's Taxonomy to guide question depth?
Each question in your assessment can be aligned to a Bloom’s Taxonomy level. Choose levels that reflect your students’ current learning stage. You can include multiple questions per level and additional questions can be generated after the initial assessment is created.
Note: Match your question types to Bloom’s levels. For example, True/False questions are not ideal for Level 6: Create.
How do I match reading levels to student needs?
You can select a reading level for your assessment that differs from the grade level used for standards. This allows you to differentiate assessments and better support diverse learners.
Once your initial assessment is created, you can regenerate it at different reading levels.
What are Distractor Rationales?
For Multiple Choice, Multiple Correct, and True/False questions, you can enable distractor rationales. These are explanations for why a student might choose an incorrect answer—helping you identify common misconceptions.
What grading support is available?
While AI TeacherTools | Assess does not include grading features, it supports grading through its export options:
- Multiple Choice, Multiple Correct, True/False: Correct and incorrect answers are identified.
- Short and Long Answer: Sample answers are provided.
- Long Answer: Suggested grading rubrics are included.
