Create Assignments with Discovery Education Resources
Teachers can add Discovery Education resources to new Brightspace modules in order to engage students in their learning in a single place. Brightspace has a new Content Experience view that offers a different experience than their Classic view which can be turned on or off. We have provided tips to navigate the new view below.
Classic View
There are two options for adding resources to a Brightspace assignment.
- Upload/Create
- Add to Existing Activities
Note: In order for students to see resources shared or assigned within Brightspace, they must be logged into Discovery Education.
Upload/Create
Once you have created a module in your Table of Contents, you are able to create new assignments. Select the Upload/Create button and select New Assignment. Note: The following steps also work for embedding Discovery Education resources in a Discussion, Quiz, or other type of assignment in Brightspace.
With your assignment open, give it a title and add in directions to students in the Instructions section. To add a Discovery Education resource:
- Select the link icon.
- Select Discovery Education under Third Party.
- Search using keywords to find a resource to use.
- Select +Embed on the resource. The resource appears as a link in the assignment.
Note: Do not add assessments using this method. Refer to the Assessments section for more information.
Existing Activities
Alternatively, you have the option to add Discovery Education resources as an External Learning Tool. This gives you the opportunity to add a resource to your module but not have it tied to an assignment or other feature. Once you have created a module in your Table of Contents, you are able to add resources. Select the Existing Activities button and choose Discovery Education.
To add a Discovery Education resource:
- Select Search Resources.
- Search using keywords to find a resource to use.
- Select +Embed on the resource. The resource appears as a separate item in the module.

Create Assessments with Discovery Education Resources
Teachers can add Discovery Education assessments to their Brightspace module.
Note: In order for students to see resources shared or assigned within Brightspace, they must be logged into Discovery Education.
Partners who have any of our Techbook products - Math, Science, Social Studies - will see assessments appear in this option. If you do not have access to our Techbook products, you can create assessments in our Assessment Builder tool or in Studio (by adding assessment modules to a board or slideshow) and they will appear for sharing with students.
It's important to understand that while there are two methods for adding resources to Brightspace, there is only one way to add assessments. If you try to add a Discovery Education assessment to a Brightspace assignment, it will open in Discovery Education and no longer be tied to the student in Brightspace, and therefore, will not show up in your gradebook.
Instead, you should add the Discovery Education assessment as an External Learning Tool. Once you have created a module in your Table of Contents, you are able add resources. Select Existing Activities and choose Discovery Education.
You will follow the same workflow in the New Content Experience.
To add a Discovery Education resource:
- Select Find Assessments.
- Select your desired assessment:
- Techbook Partners should filter down to the course and concept to find the appropriate assessment (as shown below).
- Non-Techbook Partners should select from their own assessments at the top.
- Select +Embed on the resource. The resource appears as a separate item in the module.
Once students have completed the assessment, a teacher can open their Brightspace gradebook to see the grades. Grades can be adjusted in the gradebook as you would with any other Brightspace assignment.
Note: When a teacher views the assessment in Brightspace, they will see it in teacher view with correct answers marked. When students open it, they will have a blank assessment to take.
Student View
Adding Discovery Education resources and assessments into Brightspace provides students a one-stop place to experience the content in engaging ways.
Note: In order for students to see resources shared or assigned within Brightspace, they must be logged into Discovery Education. If the teacher is using the new Content Experience view, please make sure to “unhide” the assignment by switching on visibility.
Viewing Resources in Assignments
When a student selects a linked resource in an assignment, it opens the resource in Discovery Education in a separate tab. Once the student engages with the resource, they can return to the Brightspace tab and complete the assignment.
Viewing Resources as External Learning Tools
When a student selects the resource as an external learning tool, the resource opens inside Brightspace. Students can engage with the resource right there on the screen.
View this walkthrough in the New Content Experience video.
Viewing Assessments
Assessments open within Brightspace. Students select Take Assessment to begin. They move through the assessment and answer the questions. Once they are all answered, they Submit. This takes them to a results screen. They can review any computer-scored items. They can switch between the items to view their results. Additionally, wrong answers display remediation resources from inside Discovery Education to support the student in learning more about the topic.
