Discovery Education Experience provides content, instructional strategies, and digital tools that support STEM education and the P21 framework.
Overview
STEM is more than Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. At Discovery Education, we see STEM as Students and Teachers Energizing Minds. STEM asks students to consider deep, real-world questions and collaborate with others to arrive at meaningful conclusions. Learning through interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary units of study challenges students and helps them develop important and relevant skills needed for evolving and expanding careers in the future.
The Partnership for 21st Century Learning (P21) outlines a framework of student outcomes and support systems which define and illustrate the skills and knowledge needed for students to thrive in the workplace and as citizens. This framework supports STEM education with the breadth and depth of knowledge and skills represented:
- Content Knowledge and 21st Century Themes
- Learning and Innovation Skills (4Cs)
- Information, Media, and Technology Skills
- Life and Career Skills
In addition to the P21 Framework, the Chicago Outlier Study includes attributes of the most successful STEM Schools in America. They identify these six core elements that equate with the STEM schools’ key educational goals:
- Problem-Based Learning
- Rigorous Learning
- School Community and Belonging
- Career, Technology, and Life Skills
- Personalization of Learning
- External Community
