Each lesson lasts about 60 minutes.
How are Grades 2-3 lessons structured?
Each 2nd and 3rd grade lesson includes three sections:
- Engage
- Build Knowledge
- Check for Understanding.
How do Grades 2–3 lessons build on Grades K–1 lessons?
Grades 2-3 lessons follow the same structure as grades K-1 (Engage → Build Knowledge → Check for Understanding), but 2nd and 3rd grade lessons include an added step inside the Build Knowledge section. Students will dig into informational texts across several subtopics. This added depth is why grades 2-3 lessons run longer than grades K-1 lessons.

Yes, grades 2-3 SSE lessons include an Educator Support document focusing on key vocabulary and suggestions to help activate prior knowlege and make connections. Grades 2-3 Lesson Structure
Engage: Sparking Curiosity
Every 2nd and 3rd grade SSE lesson opens with a compelling question paired with a quick activity designed to spark curiosity and tap into what students already know
Build Knowledge: Exploring New Content
In the Build Knowledge section of the lesson, students start with an intro video, picking up a key vocabulary word along the way. They then reflect on what they watched and heard and discuss their ideas. Students then dig into three or four subtopics tied to the main lesson topic. Each subtopic slide pairs a short informational paragraph with a primary or secondary source image, vocabulary in context, and a quick activity — drawing, writing a sentence, discussing with a partner, or acting out a scenario. From there, students reflect to connect and synthesize what they've learned across the subtopics, then apply it through a whole-class activity.
Check for Understanding: Demonstrating Learning
Each grades 2-3 lesson finishes with a final activity that mirrors the format of the whole-class activity they just finished.
