Social Studies Essentials (SSE) is Discovery Education's supplemental K–5 social studies curriculum, built to help students develop literacy, historical thinking, and inquiry skills through videos, stories, primary sources, and hands-on activities.

What is Social Studies Essentials (SSE)?
SSE is a supplemental curriculum designed to complement your existing social studies instruction, not replace it — adding standards-aligned videos, stories, primary sources, and activities to what you're already teaching.
What instructional model does it use?
The program is grounded in the C3 Framework for Social Studies Education, which centers every lesson around a four-step Inquiry Arc:
- Developing questions
- Applying a content-specific lens
- Evaluating sources
- Communicating conclusions
Why did you use the C3 Framework?
Research links content-rich instruction to stronger literacy outcomes — when students spend consistent time on social studies, they build background knowledge and academic vocabulary that makes future reading easier. Grounding the program in the C3 Framework's Inquiry Arc also means students are practicing the same questioning, evidence-evaluation, and communication skills they'll need for civic life, not just memorizing facts.
How is the SSE Curriculum Structured?
Grade Bands
Social Studies Essentials is organized into three grade bands — K–1, 2–3, and 4–5 — each with its own lesson structure and pacing that scaffolds up in complexity as students get older.

K–1 units and lessons serve as a high-interest introduction to social studies content and thinking skills, helping students build early comfort with questioning, discussion, and reflection before taking on more complex inquiry work in later grades. |
2–3 |

Grades 2–3 content scaffolds the inquiry process with short informational texts, discussion, and hands-on activities, helping students build the skills to explore a topic, make sense of what they've learned, and apply it — preparing them for more independent inquiry work ahead. |
4–5 |
~80 minutes |
In Grades 4–5, students receive direct instruction in the lesson topic to build knowledge, analyze a primary or secondary source through a structured protocol, and make connections that provide evidence to answer the compelling question — skills that build toward the independence expected in middle school. |
Units and Lessons
Every grade level includes five units with six lessons per unit, for a total of 30 weekly lessons. If you're new to the program, we recommend starting with Unit 1 of your grade level to get a feel for how a typical lesson flows before you start quarter or year plans.
