Social Studies Essentials: Curriculum Overview

Inquiry Skills

The Grades K-1 curriculum sparks curiosity while introducing early thinking skills, giving students a comfortable, engaging start with questioning, discussion, and reflection before they move into more complex inquiry work in later grades.

Disciplinary Thinking

The social studies content in the K–1 grade band builds a foundation in social studies by moving from self and community outward. Kindergarten focuses on personal and community identity, communication, and foundational geography skills like reading maps and globes. First grade then introduces civic concepts, exploring citizenship, government, and how past and present choices shape people's lives.

Literacy Development

Kindergarten and 1st grade lessons bring social studies to life through videos, original stories, and informational texts, giving students frequent practice with listening, speaking, and foundational literacy skills. 

Inquiry Skills

Grades 2-3 support the inquiry process through short informational texts, discussion, and hands-on activities. These experiences help students develop the skills to investigate a topic, draw meaning from what they find, and put that understanding into practice — laying the groundwork for more independent inquiry as they progress.

Disciplinary Thinking

In grades 2-3, students broaden their view from local government to the wider world. Second grade examines how levels of government work together, how the interaction of geography and human environments shape communities, and how people use sources and economic reasoning to understand the past, present, and future. Third grade then traces the growth of communities and civilizations over time, from early human migration and ancient societies to Native American nations, European colonization of the US, and the founding of the US government. Along the way, students explore the three branches of government and the rights of citizenship, as well as how trade, competition, and supply and demand drive business decisions. 

Literacy Development

In grades 2 and 3, lessons build in short, accessible informational texts that give students regular chances to read, write, speak, and listen within a social studies context.

Inquiry Skills

In Grades 4-5, students build knowledge through direct instruction on the lesson topic, then analyze a primary or secondary source using a structured protocol and draw connections that provide evidence for the compelling question — skills that prepare them for the independent inquiry expected in middle school.

Disciplinary Thinking

Grades 4-5 explore how geography and history shaped the nation. Fourth graders study how landscape, resources, climate, and Native American peoples influenced the growth of the US's five regions. Fifth graders then trace the broader sweep of US history — Indigenous life, European colonization, independence and the Constitution, westward expansion, industrial change, and the Civil War's lasting impact on the nation.

Literacy Development

In Grades 4-5, students work with more complex historical content and primary and secondary sources through activities that build disciplinary literacy and strengthen historical thinking skills.
