Overview
The Discovery Education – Brightspace by D2L integration provides Single Sign-On (SSO) and an embedded search widget, enabling users to work across systems to add Discovery Education content to Brightspace. Requirements
(All requirements must be confirmed to proceed)
- Only schools that subscribe to Discovery Education services may have the app configured within Brightspace.
- Ability to bulk-load/update user data to Discovery Education’s SFTP server via CSV files OR alternate user provisioning process. See Imports for Single Sign-On for details.
Steps to Implement
- Complete the integration form.
- Build a process to generate and post CSV files via SFTP. By default, emails are used to match users across Discovery Education and Brightspace. See Imports for Single Sign-On for details or below for alternate user provisioning processes.
Add the Integration
- Log into Brightspace as an administrator.

Navigate to Admin Tools (Setting gear icon) and select Remote Plugins from the Organization Related menu.
- Click New Remote Plugin.
- In the Remote Plugin screen, configure the following options and click Save:

Plugin type: Quicklink (CIM)
- If you do not see this plugin type, please make sure the Brightspace Admin does the following:
- Select the Admin gear.
- Select on Config Variable Browser.
- Enter d2l.Tools.Lti.ContentItemMessaging.IsEnabled in the search field and select enter.
- Select the variable name when it appears.
- Turn the org value to ON.
- This variable must be on to see the Content Item Messaging options in the remote plugins tool.
- If you do not see this plugin type, please make sure the Brightspace Admin does the following:
- Target width and height: 800x600 or preferred dimensions
- Name: Discovery Education
- Launch Point URL: https://app.discoveryeducation.com/learn/lti/signin
- LTI Key and Secret: Provided by a member of Discovery Education OR retrieved from Discovery Education’s My Admin Dashboard interface
- Icons:

Add Org Units: Select all courses, course templates, and departments this integration will be used for. Only the selected Org Units will gain access to this tool/link.

Plugin type: Quicklink (CIM)

- Select Save.
- Navigate to Admin Tools (Setting gear icon) and select External Learning Tools.
- Select the Manage Tool Providers tab.
- Look for app.discoveryeducation.com
- If there is more than one with this launch point URL and this is your first install, please delete the first one. To delete a duplicate tool provider:
- Click the dropdown beside app.discoveryeducation.com and select Delete.
- On the Confirmation popup select “Delete”
- If there is more than one with this launch point URL and this is your first install, please delete the first one. To delete a duplicate tool provider:
- Select app.discoveryeducation.com.

Navigate to Security Settings and check all boxes.
- Select Save and Close.
You can now navigate to any course added to “Add Org Units” and add this link as a new “Existing Activity” to place within your course structure via the content tool.
Note: By default, email addresses are used to match users across Brightspace and Discovery Education.
If email addresses can be used, your setup is complete.
If emails cannot be used, studentID and teacherID will need to be used. To configure this, follow these steps to complete your set-up:
Lis_person_sourcedid:
- Navigate to Admin Tools (Setting gear icon) and select Config Variable Browser. (Note: If this does not appear as an option, please contact your LMS admin for administrative access.)
- In the search bar that appears on the top right, type d2l.Tools.Lti.SendLisPersonSourcedId.
- Click on d2l.Tools.Lti.SendLisPersonSourcedId under Name and Description.
- Change Instance Value and Org Value to On.
- Click Save after each change.
Custom_discoveryeducationid:
- Navigate to Admin Tools (Setting gear icon) and select External Learning Tools.
- Scroll until you find Discovery Education Launch and select it.
- Scroll to Custom Parameters and select Add Custom Parameters.
- Once the field appears, enter as seen below:
- Do not alter anything else, select Save and Close.
