Teachers and Administrators can issue QR Codes to support student logins to Discovery Education. This provides an alternative method that is quick and easy for students.
Generating QR codes for student logins serves as an additional option for logging in and does not replace any previous login methods. Students can still use their traditional login methods at any time.
When generating QR Sign In codes, students must have a Discovery Education account and your classes must be set up. If you are unsure how to do either, explore these articles:
This feature can be turned off at the district or school level. If you are a teacher and don't see this option, please reach out to your district/school IT department to check on the setting.
Teacher Setup: Generate QR Sign In Codes for a Class
Teachers can issue QR codes for their students through the My Classrooms section of their My DE homepage. To do this:
- From your My DE homepage, click the My Classrooms button.
- In the left side menu, click All Classrooms.
- Click the Actions button (three vertical dots) on the class tile and select Bulk Issue QR Codes.
-
A list of all students will appear.
- You will be able to see who has a QR code already and when it will expire.
-
Deselect any students who you do not wish to issue a QR code too.
- To ensure student privacy, a student can only have one active QR code to sign in. If you reissue a QR code to a student, it will invalidate the previously generated QR Code. If a student has more than one teacher, you may want to check before doing this to ensure the student knows which QR to use across all classrooms.
- Once you have selected the correct students, click Generate QR Codes from Selection.
-
Once the QR codes are generated, you have a few layout options:
- Avery 5160 Address Labels (1" x 2-5/8")
- Avery 22806 Print-to-the-Edge Square Labels 2" x 2"
- Single Student - one QR code per page
- Select Download and it will automatically download onto your device.
It is strongly recommended that you save this PDF to your computer for future use and to avoid re-issuing QR codes.
Admin Setup: Generate Sign In Codes for Schools
Anyone with a School Admin account in Discovery Education can generate QR codes for students at the school level. To do this:
- Click the My Admin tile from your My DE homepage.
- Click the Manage School dropdown in the upper right corner.
- Note: If you have a District Admin account, you will need to click on a School first before proceeding with the next few steps.
- Select Issue Sign In QR Code.
- The school roster will appear. Click Generate QR Codes from Selection.
-
Once the QR codes are generated, you have a few layout options:
- Avery 5160 Address Labels (1" x 2-5/8")
- Avery 22806 Print-to-the-Edge Square Labels 2" x 2"
- Single Student - one QR code per page
- Select Download and it will automatically download onto your device.
Student Access with QR Code
Signing in with a QR Code serves as an additional option for logging in. All previously created login methods will continue to work and can be used at any time.
To log in with a QR Code, students should visit discoveryeducation.com, discoveryeducation.ca, or discoveryeducation.co.uk and select Log In at the top of the page, and select Sign In with QR Code.
Hold up the QR code to the camera to scan. Once your computer reads the QR code, you will land on your Discovery Education homepage. Note: You may need to ensure that your camera is enabled for the website.
If the QR code is not working, click Back to Sign In, and use your username and password to log in.
QR Code Sign In Best Practices
Here are a few tips to help make access to Discovery Education through QR Codes the best experience:
- Save the PDF of QR codes to your device for quick printing at any time.
- Print two copies of your QR codes - one to distribute to students and one to keep handy in case a student loses their QR code.
- If students access digital learning tools through a district or school website portal, be sure to include the Discovery Education login page on that site for quick access for students.
- If students are on a laptop or computer, have them bookmark the Discovery Education login page in their browser for quick access.
- If using iPads, add the Discovery Education login page to the home screen of the student's iPad. You can do this by:
- Launch Safari on your device.
- Navigate to the site that you want to create a Home screen shortcut. (We recommend the QR Login Page at https://app.discoveryeducation.com/learn/signin/qr.)
- Tap the Share icon (the square with an arrow pointing out of it) at the bottom of the screen.
- Scroll down to the list of actions and tap Add to Home Screen. (If you don't see the action, scroll to the bottom and tap Edit Actions, then tap Add next to the Add to Home Screen action. After that, you'll be able to select it from the Share screen.)
- Use a QR code generator (like GoQRme or QRStuff) to create a QR code for the login page (We recommend the QR Login Page at https://app.discoveryeducation.com/learn/signin/qr.) and hang it up in your classroom for students to scan. Students will then use their personalized QR Code to log in to their own account.
