Overview
Elementary Science Techbook sets students up to do science, instead of just learning about science. Once you log in to Science Techbook and access your course, easily navigate the curriculum.
How do I access my curriculum?
If your school or district has access to more than one Science Techbook course, select the desired grade level from the Course menu in the top action bar.
This takes you to the grade Overview page. Units are color coded by focus:
- Pink for Physical Science
- Blue for Earth and Space Science
- Orange for Life Science.
The number of lessons associated with each unit is also listed. From here, you can explore the Units and Lessons within a course.
How do I navigate the curriculum?
The following are key terms used in Science Techbook:
- Course: The overall course of study in an academic area.
- Unit: The program is organized into four cohesive standards-aligned units.
- Concept: Concepts in each unit are structured with lessons that follow the 5E instructional framework and unpack the science ideas in each unit.
- Lesson: Lessons are broken into learning activities that follow a logical progression to build student understanding of science ideas. Lessons are color-coded for ease of planning.
Note that Science Techbook opens to the last course visited. If you have access to multiple courses, you may switch courses by using the drop-down at the top of the page.
Select a Unit
From your Course Overview page, select a Unit.
Unit 4: Resources on Earth Unit selected
Each concept launches with a real-world phenomenon followed by intentional sequencing of lessons to capture student interest and motivate them to make sense of the world around them.
Choose a Lesson
Within each Unit, dive into Concepts that are purposely scaffolded to support the Unit standards. Lessons within the Concept follow the 5E model to promote active student learning: Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate.
You can organize your lessons in Grid view or in List view.
- Grid view organizes content into grid-like structure and allows you to view content in a series of tiles.
- List view allows you to view lesson-level standards and student expectations.
Rocks and Minerals
Each lesson card shows the associated 5E and the estimated completion time. Lessons are structured in 20-minute increments to align with your science instruction schedule.
Note that in Explain lessons, students construct a scientific explanation using the Claim-Evidence-Reasoning framework.
When you select a Lesson, it opens up into a Lesson preview where you can review your ready-to-teach lesson and educator supports. Learn more about Lessons here.
