Overview

Discovery Education offers a variety of built-in text support features designed to make digital content more accessible and engaging for all learners. Whether students need help decoding complex vocabulary, listening to text read aloud, or translating content into their preferred language, these tools are easy to access and seamlessly integrated across many resources.

Read Aloud

Using Read Aloud with Documents

The Read Aloud feature reads the entire document, including headers, body text, and image metadata, providing comprehensive audio support for students. Users can customize the reading experience using the settings gear icon, which offers options to adjust reading speed, highlight colors, font type, and more, this allows educators and students to tailor the tool to individual learning preferences and accessibility needs.

This feature allows students to follow along with on-screen text while listening to it read aloud, supporting a range of reading levels and learning needs.

Using Read Aloud with Quizzes

At this time, the Quiz Tool does not have text-to-speech capabilities. 

Using Read Aloud with Assessments

Discovery Education assessments include built-in Text-to-Speech functionality to support students who benefit from auditory learning or reading assistance.

To use the Read Aloud feature:

1. Highlight the portion of text you want read aloud.
2. Click Play Text to begin audio playback.

This feature helps students engage with assessment content more effectively by allowing them to hear the text while following along visually.

Using Read Aloud with AI TeacherTools | Assess

When you create an assessment in AI TeacherTools | Assess and export it to Discovery Education, the assessment opens in Studio, where Immersive Reader provides powerful read aloud capabilities.

Immersive Reader supports students by reading all visible text aloud and offering customization options such as text size, font style, background color, and translation. This makes assessments more accessible and inclusive.

1. Export your assessment from AI TeacherTools | Assess.
2. The assessment automatically opens in Studio.
3. Click the Immersive Reader icon to launch the read aloud experience. Note: Immersive Reader does not currently support reading answer options in certain question modules. For example, in multiple-choice questions, Immersive Reader will read the question prompt but not the answer choices.

Reading Ruler & Page Mask

To support growing readers and help improve focus and comprehension, Discovery Education offers Reading Ruler and Page Mask tools within select text resources. These features visually guide students by highlighting or isolating portions of the page, making it easier to concentrate on specific lines or sections of text.

• Reading Ruler: Highlights one line of text at a time to help students track their reading.
• Page Mask: Dims surrounding text to reduce visual distractions and emphasize the area being read.

These tools are especially helpful for students who benefit from structured visual support while reading.
